Jim Howard, lead pastor of the Valencia campus of the more than 6,000 member Real Life Church in California fatally shot himself in the head at home after a protracted battle with mental illness.

Mighty contributor and former pastor Steve Austin wrote about his experience in his piece, “I’m a Pastor, but Faith Didn’t Stop Me From Attempting Suicide.” He wrote:
I was released from ICU and immediately transferred to the psych ward. The psych ward. Me. The former worship leader. The youth pastor. The Christian radio host. The blogger. The ministry school graduate. The father. The husband. The outgoing one. The friendly one. The upbeat one. Me. I was sitting in a wheelchair, headed to the psych ward, and I stayed there for several days.

It’s common for people to believe pastors or other authority figures “don’t struggle” or “have it all together,” but it’s important to remember pastors are real people with real struggles too.⠀
In his statement on Thursday, George noted that Howard had been battling with mental illness for a while and had even spoken publicly about his struggle with the disease. Howard had reportedly also served at Real Life Church for more than three years.
“Sadly, Jim suffered in private with mental health challenges — some of which he bravely discussed in public — and was wrestling with some personal issues in recent months. This week he made the tragic decision to end his pain. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, the RLC family and all those who were blessed to know him,” George said.
He further urged church members who are struggling and need help to call the church.
The Jared Monroe Foundation a California nonprofit dedicated to fostering awareness, understanding and support for Bipolar Disorder also urged those suffering with mental illness to reach out for help in the wake of the pastor’s suicide.
“Our deepest condolences to Pastor Jim Howard’s family, friends and RLC family. Mental health challenges affect EVERYONE. Don’t suffer alone. Reach out if you need to talk. You don’t have to suffer alone,” the foundation said in a statement on Friday.
Other members of the Valencia community who knew Howard also shared their grief at his passing with Hometown Station.
“Jim Howard was a class act,” KHTS owner Carl Goldman told the outlet. “He was passionate about our valley. We worked closely on the candlelight vigil for the Santa Clarita victims of the Las Vegas shootings, as well as many Halloween events at Real Life Church. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and everyone he touched. He will be missed.”
“There are no words anyone can say that will make the griever feel better,” Sharon Brubaker, a local advanced certified grief recovery specialist said. “The biggest thing we can do is be there and support. Don’t try to fix it, we can’t fix it.”
“Some people are going to want to talk right now, and the most amazing thing is that we are actually talking about suicide and death by suicide,” said Brubaker. “It’s not a stigma anymore and we have to talk about it day in and day out.”
