Most of us feel sad or a little blue every once in a while, but if you’ve been feeling downright unhappy for days at a time (or even weeks), you may be depressed. An estimated 19 million American adults are living with major depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The good news is there is hope for the millions of people living with clinical depression. Not only can it be treated, but it can also be prevented.
If you think you may be depressed, you should immediately seek help from a mental-health professional. But your treatment doesn’t have to stop there. You can also help yourself by finding ways to relieve stress such as daily meditation sessions, yoga classes and finding time to read the Bible. Here are 10 inspiring Bible verses for those struggling with depression.
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
If you are choosing a way of life that is ungodly, you may be feeling down about your choices, and therefore find yourself depressed. Fear not, the light of the Lord is always with you. Repeat this verse to yourself until you begin to feel God’s strength within your soul.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Life is stressful, there’s no denying that. But even though the obstacles in your life may seem unbearable, you need to focus on God and His message first. Have faith that God has a plan for you, and you will be taken care of.
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
This verse from Philippians 4:12-14 reminds us that whether times are good or bad, our Faith in God will always carry us through and give us the strength to live a better life.
1 Peter 5:6-7
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
When you’re feeling anxious, miserable or hopeless, remember that Jesus died for our sins. You will never have to walk alone because Jesus is always with you. Give Him your troubles and your worries and ask Him to heal your heart.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
No matter how hard things get, never lose sight in what really matters most in life; family friends and faith. Have faith in the Lord and let that Faith guide you through your darkest hours.
“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”
Wallowing in your sadness and refusing to seek help will get you nowhere. If you are depressed, you must first get help from a mental health professional, and then work to find ways to bring joy into your life. Repeat this verse and then find other verses that share God’s good word with the world. You’ll be adding some Christian cheer to your everyday life.
2 Corinthians 1:3-5
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.”
This verse reminds us to take comfort in the fact that we share a love for Jesus with our Christian brothers and sisters. When you’re feeling lonely, repeat this verse and remember that you have a community in Christ to support you whenever you need help.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, then don’t let your heart be troubled. Release the anxieties in your life by simply following God and remembering His message. He will always stay by your side and guide you to exactly where you need to be.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
Ease your mind in times of trouble with a comforting verse like this one. Your belief in Jesus Christ has the power to help you fight any problem, leap any obstacle and carry on through any predicament.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Prayer has the power to pull you through anything. If you’re feeling depressed, get professional help immediately and use prayer to ask God for help as well. Have faith that you can find your way past your depression, and use Jesus as your guide!
