Death: The Last Defeated Enemy
Who is Death?
“When He (the Lamb) broke open the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature call out, “Come.” So I looked, and behold, an ashen (pale greenish gray) horse [like a corpse, representing death and pestilence]; and its rider’s name was Death; and Hades (the realm of the dead) was following with him. They were given authority and power over a fourth part of the earth, to kill with the sword and with famine and with plague (pestilence, disease) and by the wild beasts of the earth.” (REVELATION 6:7-8AMP)
As it says in the passage above, the rider of the ashen horse is Death. Death is a demonic spirit whose role is to kill.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.” (EPHESIANS 6:12 AMP)
There are different hierarchies of demons. Death is a high-ranking demon. Probably ranked among the “rulers”.
The Origin of Death
Death first came into the world because of what happened in the Garden of Eden – Adam sinned after being tempted by Satan.
“Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the LORD God had made. And the serpent (Satan) said to the woman, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden, except the fruit from the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God said, ‘You shall not eat from it nor touch it, otherwise you will die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened [that is, you will have greater awareness], and you will be like God, knowing [the difference between] good and evil.” And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise and insightful, she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of the two of them were opened [that is, their awareness increased], and they knew that they were naked; and they fastened fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.”(GENESIS 3:1-7 AMP)
The whole earth fell with Adam, and Death entered the world.
“For since [it was] by a man that death came [into the world], it is also by a Man that the resurrection of the dead has come. For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:21-22 AMP)
This is why Death came into the world – it was a consequence of Adam’s sin.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(ROMANS 6:23 AMP)
God was the first One to kill. He killed animals to make coverings for Adam and Eve’s nakedness and sin.
“The LORD God made tunics of [animal] skins for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” (GENESIS 3:21 AMP)
For many years, Death was powerful, taking everyone’s lives. Death was allowed to reign because of Adam’s sin.
“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned. Sin was [committed] in the world before the Law [was given], but sin is not charged [against anyone] when there is no law [against it]. Yet death ruled [over mankind] from Adam to Moses [the Lawgiver], even over those who had not sinned as Adam did. Adam is a type of Him (Christ) who was to come [but in reverse–Adam brought destruction, Christ brought salvation]. But the free gift [of God] is not like the trespass [because the gift of grace overwhelms the fall of man]. For if many died by one man’s trespass [Adam’s sin], much more [abundantly] did God’s grace and the gift [that comes] by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, overflow to [benefit] the many. Nor is the gift [of grace] like that which came through the one who sinned. For on the one hand the judgment [following the sin] resulted from one trespass and brought condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift resulted from many trespasses and brought justification [the release from sin’s penalty for those who believe]. For if by the trespass of the one (Adam), death reigned through the one (Adam), much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in [eternal] life through the One, Jesus Christ.” (ROMANS 5:12-17 AMP)
Our Lord Jesus Conquered Death at the Cross
Through His death at the cross, Jesus took back the position of federal head over the earth from the devil – Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly in His life – the opposite of Adam who disobeyed God’s commandment.
The devil used to have the power of Death through the Law which he used to accuse man of their sinfulness and cause death.
Jesus’ death at the cross made the devil powerless because now man is not made righteous through his own works –
we receive the gift of righteousness freely from God when we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
The devil cannot find a flaw in Jesus’ perfect sacrifice!
“Therefore, since [these His] children share in flesh and blood [the physical nature of mankind], He Himself in a similar manner also shared in the same [physical nature, but without sin], so that through [experiencing] death He might make powerless (ineffective, impotent) him who had the power of death–that is, the devil– and [that He] might free all those who through [the haunting] fear of death were held in slavery throughout their lives.” (HEBREWS 2:14-15 AMP)
How do we know that Jesus was and is completely sinless?
Death had no hold over Him! The wages of sin is death, but since He is sinless, Jesus cannot stay dead.
On the third day after Jesus’ death, God the Father raised Jesus up as a declaration of His total victory over Death.
“But God raised Him up, releasing Him and bringing an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in death’s power. For David says of Him, ‘I SAW THE LORD CONSTANTLY BEFORE ME; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN [from my state of security]. ‘THEREFORE MY HEART REJOICED AND MY TONGUE EXULTED EXCEEDINGLY; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE [that is, will encamp in anticipation of the resurrection]; ‘FOR YOU WILL NOT FORSAKE ME and ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES (the realm of the dead), NOR LET YOUR HOLY ONE UNDERGO DECAY [after death].” (ACTS 2:24-27 AMP)
Walking into the Complete Victory over Death
Now instead of the devil, Jesus holds the keys of Death and Hell.
The devil can no longer decide the end point of a person’s life. It is completely in God’s hands now.
Jesus has already won a perfect victory over Death. Now we are walking into the fullness of that victory.
“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. And He placed His right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last [absolute Deity, the Son of God], and the Ever-living One [living in and beyond all time and space]. I died, but see, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of [absolute control and victory over] death and of Hades (the realm of the dead).” (REVELATION 1:17-18 AMP)
As believers, we are taught to look forward to the Blessed Hope which is the Rapture – the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ for the church.
He will come back on the clouds and in the twinkling of an eye, we will be caught up in the air to be with Him forever.
That will be one step closer to manifesting the complete victory over Death.
All believers in Jesus who are alive on earth will escape Death’s clutches through the Rapture.
All the believers who are asleep in death when the Rapture happens will be raised up as well.
Death will have no choice but to give up all the spirits of the believers who were asleep in death.
Death once had a sting when man was declared righteous or unrighteous through their ability to keep the Law.
But now that we are under the New Covenant of Grace, it is no longer about our works to justify us because our righteousness is a free gift from God!
The sting of Death is rendered powerless.
“And when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the Scripture will be fulfilled that says, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory (vanquished forever). O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin [by which it brings death] is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory [as conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:54-57 AMP)
After the Rapture, during the Millennial Reign of Christ when Jesus rules on earth from Jerusalem, poverty, sickness and early death will be a thing of the past.
We will see with our eyes the enemies of Jesus being defeated.
The final enemy that we will see defeated is Death.
“For Christ must reign [as King] until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be abolished and put to an end is death.” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:25-26AMP)
Death and Hell will be thrown into the lake of fire, along with the devil and all the demons.
This is when the kingdom of God will have walked into the complete and perfect victory over Death.
For everyone that Death has killed, Death will suffer for eternity, tormented in the unquenchable flames.
“Then death and Hades [the realm of the dead] were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire [the eternal separation from God].”(REVELATION 20:14 AMP)
Ever since Jesus died at the cross more than 2000 years ago, Death was already declared as a defeated foe.
Even though this demon is still riding an ashen horse moving to and fro on the earth, we don’t have to fear it – Death has lost its sting.
We can rejoice for we are alive in Christ and have eternal life in Him. Blessed Easter to you!
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that we have the freedom from the fear of Death.
We declare that Death is indeed a defeated enemy. We receive the grace to walk in the same resurrection life that raised Jesus from the dead.
Grant us the victory over Death in every area of our lives. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
