A message through music: Christian reggae band Christafari to headline free concert

Assistant Pastor Josh Lewis of Calvary Chapel Victorville hopes people will “hear the message” when Christian reggae band Christafari takes the stage during the church’s free community concert on Friday.

“We wanted to reach out to the community and give them the opportunity to come out and hear the message,” Lewis said.

Christafari, who will perform at 7 p.m., formed in 1990 centering around the personality of ordained religious minister Mark Mohr, who was Rastafarian until the age of 17.

“They do a lot of cover songs like ‘Ocean’ and ‘Soul Fire,’” Lewis said. “And me being a musician, I like their sound a lot.”

According to Lewis, it can be difficult when requesting popular Christian artists to perform, though Calvary Chapel didn’t have a problem reaching out to Christafari.

″(Christafari) shares their heart with the community,” Lewis said. “They tend to reach a more underground type of crowd.”

While this will mark the first free concert hosted by Calvary Chapel Victorville, Christafari is no stranger to the High Desert, having previously headlined a free concert at Calvary Chapel Apple Valley.

“No one wants to turn down a free concert — that’s for sure,” Lewis said. “You can bring your friends and family to enjoy a free concert and hear God’s word.”

Christafari pulled an audience of over 400 guests during their performance two years ago in Apple Valley.

“We really liked the turnout we had back then,” Lewis said. “It was the most amount of people we had seen in that church.”

During the concert, complimentary cookies and coffee can be found in the fellowship hall, also known as the Grace Cafe. Christafari will also have an array of their personal merchandise available for purchase.

“Anybody and everybody is welcome. I am excited to see what God is going to do here,” Lewis said.

While Calvary Chapel Victorville doesn’t have future plans for another concert, “that can change at any moment,” according to Lewis. “We are always excited to reach the community around us.”

Calvary Chapel Victorville is located at 15081 Center St., Victorville. For more information, call 760-241-0778.
